Frieze (2013-14) us based on a narrative of scenes from New York City construction sites. The format references the architectural structural element found in cultures from Greco/Roman to Asian to Mayan, and is often decorated with bas-relief narratives. Modern architecture tends to avoid the decorative, but its context still contains rich narrative. “Frieze” seeks to bridge the gap by making the narrative about modern architecture, while incorporating history through structural form. My interest in the element of time forms an important foundation for this work. Frieze is constructed in sections that can be installed and rearranged variably.
